Preparing for a Warm Weather Horseback Ride

Updated: Aug 5, 2021

One of the biggest benefits of booking a trail ride in the Rocky Mountain Range is that you will likely get great temperatures even in the heat of summer. In fact, at the highest elevations, it is not impossible that you may see snow on the mountain peaks in July! However, weather can vary, and we do have some atypically warm days on occasion during the height of summer.

Fortunately, our trail rides are majorly shaded and comfortable year-round, but if you are scheduled to come ride with us on a day where the temperature is creeping up, there are a few things you can do to make yourself more comfortable on your journey. Check out our top tips for warm weather horseback riding below!

Tips for Staying Comfortable When Horseback Riding in Warm Weather

Wear light-colored, moisture-wicking apparel. Because heat tends to gravitate towards darker colors, wearing light-colored clothing can help you stay much cooler when you are in the sun. If you have light-colored athletic clothing that is designed to wick moisture away from the body, that can do an even better job at keeping you cool.

Consider athletic pants instead of jeans. Jeans are the classic choice for Western-style horseback riders, but when things heat up, choosing tights or pants that are made of workout material can be a better option. As long as the fabric is thick and durable, it will likely be a suitable choice for a trail ride with us.

Drink plenty of water. Leading up to your horseback riding reservation, be sure you and your whole family are drinking plenty of water. Staying hydrated is one of the best ways to keep your body cool, so drink as much water as you can to keep your body functioning well even in the heat.

Book a morning ride. If you or someone in your party is particularly heat-sensitive, it may be wise to book your riding reservation for the morning instead of the heat of the day. This will help you avoid riding when the sun is at its hottest and directly overhead.
