Weird and Wacky Facts About Colorado

There is a lot to love about Colorado! From the beautiful mountains to the ample adventures, we are so fortunate to get to call this place home.

Colorado is a truly unique state, with all sorts of fun facts that are worth knowing. We recently wrote a guide to the fun facts every Colorado visitor should know about some of our great history and milestones, but today, we thought it would be fun to examine the weird, the wacky and the just plain strange about our favorite state!

The Weird and Wacky Facts About the State of Colorado

A strange law in Aspen. We get quite a bit of snow here, which is perfect for making snowmen, sledding and having snowball fights—but not in Aspen! In Aspen, it is actually illegal to throw snowballs at people or buildings at any point. No snowball fights there.

We do not have presidential legacies. No United States President or Vice President has been born in Colorado—but quite a few of them do have special connections to the state!

Ancient history has its place. Picket Wire Canyonlands, located in La Junta, Colorado has the largest preserved set of dinosaur tracks in the world. You can see about a quarter mile worth of them, totaling more than 1,300 steps total!

Our ski lifts get higher than a mile. Denver may be the Mile High City, but our ski lifts go even higher! The highest ski lift in North America is found at Breckenridge Ski Resort, topping out at 13,000 feet.

Be wary of picking wildflowers. Colorado’s state flower is the Blue Columbine, a beautiful wildflower that grows all throughout the mountains. However, do not be tempted to pick it just anywhere! It is illegal to pick the flower on public land, and if you pick it in private, you must have the consent of the landowner.

We get plenty of sunshine. The city of Colorado Springs is beautiful, and it is also one of the sunniest places in the country! Each year, they receive more than 300 days of sunlight.
